Colony-forming turf-like herb to 5 cm high from a spreading rhizome. Leaves few, 2 ranked, perennial, linear, grass-like. Inflorescence a single, terminal, more or less sessile flower. Flower spreading, to 25 mm wide; summer.Tepals blue, lilac or white.

Sometimes grown as a cold-hardy alpine garden ornamental in moist acid soil.
