Octopus Plant

Plants with stems up to 3 m long, multi-stemmed, erect to spreading. Leaves in a dense rosette, numerous (more than 10), lanceolate, 23-60 cm long, 2-7 cm wide, spreading to recurved, pale green to waxy blue-green, both surfaces glabrous; margins with firm teeth 3-5 mm long, 5-20 mm apart. Inflorescence to 80 cm long, simple; individual flower stalks 35-40 mm long; perianth 35-40 mm long, yellow to red.

A vigorous species well suited to stabilise steep banks where it forms dense colonies. Frost-tender.

S Africa, Malawi, Zimbabwe.
