Latin rigidus – stiff, referring to the leaves.
Perennial herbs with bulbs. Leaves 2-3, basal, pleated. Flowers each lasting one day. Perianth segments with broad claws, those of outer segments forming a deep cup. Inner segments much shorter,inrolled around a large nectary. Stamens joined in tube, protruding far beyond style. Style branches 3,opposite stamens, deeply 2-lobed, thickened.
