Mourning Iris

An Onocyclus with leaves sword-shaped, grey-green. Stem 40-55 cm tall. Flowers 10-12 cm wide, grey, veined and mottled in dark purple; late spring. Perianth tube 3-5 cm long; falls with dark purple signal and brown-purple beard; standards erect. I. stolonifera Maxim. from c Asia is a Regelia with a thick rhizome and thinner stolons. Leaves flat, 5-15 mm wide, erect. Stem 30-60 cm, branched. Flowers 2-3, 7-8 cm wide, brown shading to violet centre; late spring. Perianth segments almost equal, all with wavy margins; falls with a blue or yellow beard.

I. hoogiana Dykes from C Asia is a Regelia which has a thick rhizome with thinner stolons. Stem 45-60 cm tall. Leaves flat, 10-15 mm wide, sword-shaped, slightly curved. Flowers 2-3, 7-10 cm wide, pale lilac-blue; falls with golden yellow beards; spring.
