Species in the sections Onocyclus (stems 1 flowered) and Regelia (stem 2 flowered) of the subgenus Iris have seeds with a white collar (the aril) and are therefore sometimes knows as Arils. They are difficult to grow in temperate climates and have been crossed with Tall and Median Bearded Irises to produce more resilient plants known as Arilbreds. They have exciting colours and have interesting rounded flowers with falls that are turned under, like the pure arils, instead of flared as in the Tall Beardeds. Australian breeders include Sam Fankhauser, Colin Fidock and members of the Blyth family.
