Leaves to 75 cm long, 5-10 mm wide. Stem to 1 m tall. Flowers 2-4, white, 5-6 cm wide; spring to summer. Outer segments 15-25 mm wide, oblanceolate, tapered at the base. Inner segments often tinged or veined with purple, yellowish at the tip.

D. latifolia Benth. from Tasmania has leaves to 1 m long, 10-22 mm wide, with stems to 1.4 m tall. Flowers 5-6, white, 6-8 cm wide. Outer segments 25-30 mm wide, broad-elliptic, abruptly narrowed at base. Inner segments strongly purple-veined, yellow at tip; late spring to summer.
The cultivar 'Amethyst Fairy' has large flowers with darker markings on the inner segments.
