Leaves 75-100 cm long, 1-2 cm wide, without a prominent midrib. Stem 1-1.5 m tall, sparsely branched. Flowers 6-8 cm wide, white, lasting up to 3 days; outer perianth segments 4.5-6 cm long with a yellow hairy signal patch; inner segments marked brown at base; late spring to summer. Style branches to 2 cm, pale mauve. Fruit capsule 3-4.5 cm long.

Some confusion exists between this species and D. iridioides and hybridisation appears possible.
