Stanhopea wardii Lindl.

Robust epiphyte. Pseudobulbs ovoid, to 7 cm long, clustered. Leaves solitary, elliptic, to 40 cm long, to 12 cm wide. Flowers 2-10, to 14 cm wide, fragrant, greenish, yellowish or pink, dotted reddish-purple; autumn. Sepals spreading. Petals bent backwards. Labellum pendent, basal part boat-shaped, thickened, grooved, orange each side with a purplish spot, middle part short with 2 erect curving horns, cream or yellowish-green, apical part broad-ovate, fleshy, grooved, margins curved backwards. Column broadly winged.

Mexico, C and S America.

S. oculata (Lodd.) Lindl. from Mexico and C America is a robust epiphyte with flowers to 15 cm wide that are white or yellow with darker spots, a pendent labellum that is boat-shaped at the base with 2 forward-pointing horns from near the centre, and a narrowly winged column.
