Stanhopea insignis Hook.

Robust epiphyte. Pseudobulbs ovoid, to 8 cm long, clustered. Leaves solitary, oblong, to 45 cm long, to 10 cm wide. Flowers 2-5, to 12 cm wide, fragrant; autumn. Sepals and petals bent backwards, yellowish with purplish blotches. Labellum pendent, basal part spherical, pouched, purplish, middle part yellow with reddish spots, apical part ovate, weakly 3-lobed at tip, pale yellow with reddish spots. Column broadly winged.

Brazil and Peru.

S. tigrina Lindl. from Mexico to Brazil is a robust epiphyte with flowers to 20 cm wide that are cream to orange with darker flecks, a pendent labellum that is deeply pouched at the base and with 2 forward-pointing horns from near the centre and a broadly winged column. Syn. S. nigroviolacea Beer.
