Robust terrestrial. Pseudobulbs ovoid, to 7 cm long. Leaves 4?6, lanceolate, to 120 cm long, to 9 cm wide. Inflorescences to 1 m tall. Flowers many, to 2.5 cm wide, purple to pink; throughout the year. Sepals and petals similar, elliptic. Labellum callus hairy, yellow.
India to New Guinea.
S. papuana Bailey from New Guinea is a robust terrestrial with squat pseudobulbs, long leaves that often droop in the upper half, erect inflorescences of 2-8 pink or purple flowers and 3-lobed labella that are yellowish towards base.
