Mall terrestrial to 25 cm tall. Basal leaves ovate, to 2.5 cm long, to 1 cm wide, in rosettes on non-flowering plants only. Stem leaves 2?5, small and narrow. Flowers solitary, to 5 cm long, erect, usually bright scarlet; summer to autumn. Dorsal sepal with a slender point to 1.5 cm long. Lateral sepals erect, embracing tip of galea, joined in lower third, ending in slender points. Labellum narrow-lanceolate, curved, protruding through sinus of lateral sepals. Syn. P. coccinea.
