Phalaenopsis amabilis (L.) Blume

White Moth Orchid

Robust epiphyte. Stem short, pendent. Leaves elliptic to obovate, to 50 cm long, to 10 cm wide, fleshy or leathery, glossy green. Inflorescences to 1 m long. Flowers few to many, to 10 cm wide, fragrant, mostly white, pinkish outside; most of year. Sepals ovate to elliptic. Petals nearly circular, clawed. Labellum 3-lobed, side lobes erect, midlobe cross-shaped with 2 terminal tendril-like appendages, base golden yellow with red suffusions, margins yellow.

Indonesia.

P. rosenstromii F.M. Bailey from Qld has been confused with P. amabilis, but has smaller flowers with a wider base to the labellum midlobe.
