Small to medium terrestrial. Leaves 4 or 5, strap-like, to 25 cm long, to 3.5 cm wide, bright green. Flowers solitary, to 5.5 cm wide; summer. Dorsal sepal ovate, larger than laterals, greenish-yellow with a dark stripe. Petals lanceolate, narrower than dorsal sepal, margins wavy, 3-toothed at tip, yellow with a dark stripe. Labellum helmet shaped, yellow with red spots inside.

P. exul (Ridl.) Rolfe from Thailand is a medium sized terrestrial with yellowishgreen leaves, solitary flowers with the dorsal sepal mostly white, greenish and maroon-spotted at base, petals that are narrow, yellowish-brown with wavy margins and a light brown, helmet shaped labellum.
P. hirsutissimum (Hook.) Stein from China and Thailand is a medium sized epiphyte or terrestrial with green leaves, solitary flowers with the dorsal sepal yellow or green, purplish in centre, petals that are narrow, purplish, with wavy margins and a light brown, helmet shaped labellum.
P. spicerianum (Mast. &T. Moore) Pfitzer from India and Burma is a medium sized terrestrial or epilith with dark green leaves, solitary (rarely 2) flowers, with the dorsal sepal mostly white with a maroon stripe and green base, petals that are narrow, mostly greenish with wavy margins, and a green or brownish helmet-shaped labellum.
