Greek nanodes – pygmy; the plants are small.
Epiphytic herbs, sympodial, with short creeping rhizomes. Stems cane-like, tufted, simple, densely covered by leaf sheaths. Leaves along stems, in 2 ranks, almost opposite, fleshy, sheathing at base, stalkless. Inflorescences terminal racemes, erect or pendent. Flowers resupinate, 1-3, small to large, variously coloured. Sepals and petals similar, free, spreading or curved backwards. Labellum entire, joined to column. Column short or long, stout. Pollinia 4, waxy.
This genus is often included in Epidendrum.
