Medium sized epilith. Stems very short. Leaves oblong to oblanceolate, to 20 cm long, to 2.5 cm wide, leathery, tip minutely 3-lobed. Inflorescences to 45 cm long, erect. Flowers solitary, to 8 cm wide, orange to scarlet with small purple warts; spring to summer. Sepals dissimilar, all fused at base, laterals larger than dorsal and fused for about half their length. Petals small, oblong, white. Labellum small, oblong or obscurely 3-lobed, 2-ridged, tip warty and curved under.

M. amabilis Rchb. f. from Peru is a small epiphyte with leathery dark green leaves and solitary flowers that have a yellow-orange to pink, red-streaked dorsal sepal and orange-red, crimson-streaked lateral sepals, all with dull red tails.
