Small epiphyte. Stems very short. Leaves obovate to elliptic, to 14 cm long, to 2 cm wide, fleshy, keeled, minutely 3-lobed. Inflorescences to 8 cm long, erect. Flowers solitary, to 6 cm long, dark purple with green or yellow tails; spring to summer. Sepals similar, all fused at base, laterals fused for about one third of their length. Petals small, oblong to elliptic. Labellum small, oblong, 2-ridged, tip curved under.

M. triangularis Lindl. from Colombia and Venezuela is a small epiphyte with leathery leaves with strongly curled margins and solitary yellowish flowers with heavy purplish-brown spotting and purple tails.
