Robust terrestrial. Stems slender, to 2 m or more long, branching, rooting at nodes, producing plantlets (keikis). Leaves many, oblong to lanceolate, to 12 cm long, to 4 cm wide. Flowers many, to 5 cm wide, variable in size, usually orange to red; most of year. Sepals and petals similar, elliptic, spreading,. Labellum 3-lobed, side lobes toothed, midlobe oblong, notched at tip, the lobes toothed.

E. difforme Jacq. from Mexico,West Indies, C and S America is a medium sized epiphyte with cane-like stems, 1-many white to greenish flowers and 3-lobed labellum with the midlobe entire or shallowly 2-lobed.

E. anceps Jacq. from the West Indies, N, C and S America is a medium sized epiphyte or epilith with compressed cane-like stems, few-many greenish-brown to dark brown flowers and 3-lobed labellum with the midlobe shallowly 2-lobed.
