Florida Butterfly Orchid

Robust epiphyte. Pseudobulbs ovoid, to 8 cm long, closely spaced, lustrous green often tinged purple. Leaves 1-32, linear to narrow-lanceolate, to 40 cm long, to 2 cm wide. Flowers 1-many, to 4 cm wide; spring to winter. Sepals and petals similar, oblong, spreading, yellowish green with reddish blotches. Labellum 3- lobed, midlobe pointed at tip, white with pink or purplish blotches and streaks.

E. alata (Bateman) Schltr. from Mexico and C America is a medium to large epiphyte with many flowered inflorescences of mostly greenish, brown-tipped flowers, the labellum midlobe being yellowish with reddish veins; E. vitellina (Lindl.) Dressler from Mexico and C America is a medium sized epiphyte with 4-12 flowered inflorescences of mostly red flowers, each with a yellow or orange labellum.
