Medium sized epiphyte. Pseudobulbs ovoid, to 11 cm long, clustered. Leaves 2 or 3, strap-like, to 45 cm long, to 4 cm wide. Flowers 3-15, to 7 cm wide; winter to spring. Sepals and petals similar, oblanceolate, the petals with wavy margins, green with brown or purplish tips. Labellum 3-lobed, midlobe almost round to broadoblong, cream with reddish veins or streaks.

E. adenocaula (La Llave &Lex.) Schltr. from Mexico is a medium sized epiphyte with many flowered inflorescences of mostly pink to purplish flowers, the labellum often being paler than the sepals and petals. [E. nemoralis (Lindl.) Schltr.]
