Small terrestrial to 5 cm tall. Leaves ovate, to 10 cm long, to 3.5 cm wide, held at ground level. Flowers to 35 mm wide, greenish to purplish, labellum calli black; spring to summer. Lateral sepals curved forwards. Petals broad, incurved. Labellum heart-shaped, calli 1?6, confined to basal part of lamina.

C. valida is still often confused with C. gunnii Lindl., but the latter has smaller flowers and is confined to Tasmania.
C. × pescottiana R.S. Rogers from SE Australia is a hybrid between C. trapeziformis and C. valida and exhibits characters intermediate between the two.The elliptic labellum with an ant-like cluster of calli on the base is distinctive. All are difficult to grow.
