Small epiphyte or epilith. Pseudobulbs flattened-globose, to 12 mm wide, deeply furrowed. Leaves oblong to elliptic, to 3 cm long, to 1 cm wide, leathery. Flowers 10?30, to 1 cm wide, cream to yellow with purple blotches; winter to summer. Sepals ovate to triangular. Petals oblong. Labellum entire, tongue-shaped.
B. schillerianum Rchb. f., Red Rope Orchid, from Qld and NSW, is a small epiphyte with pendent rhizomes, inconspicuous pseudobulbs, succulent channelled leaves and small solitary orange to red flowers. Syn. B. aurantiacum F. Muell.
This and other native Bulbophyllum are occasionally grown by enthusiasts and are sometimes available at specialist nurseries.
