Robust epiphyte or epilith. Pseudobulbs narrow, to 20 cm long, almost concealed by sheaths. Leaves oblong, to 50 cm long, to 4 cm wide. Flowers many, to 1.5 cm wide, purplish-pink with darker labellum; spring. Sepals oblong to ovate. Petals linear to narrow-elliptic. Labellum linear to lanceolate, pouched at base.
A. giganteum Lindl. from Mexico to C America and W Indies is also grown; it has leaves folded only at the base and an inflorescence to about 20 cm long.
