Perennial herb to about 1.5 m; stems purplish-brown, hairy; stem roots present; bulbils absent. Leaves cauline, alternate, linear, hairless. Inflorescence 1-2, sometimes to 10 flowered. Flowers trumpet-shaped, spreading, tips recurved; fragrant; summer to autumn.Tepals to 20 x 3 cm long, white, flushed purple outside; unspotted. Nectary green, with hairs and warts. Anthers yellow to purplish; pollen yellow to brown.
Grown as an ornamental flowering bulb in sun or partial shade on well-drained rich soil.
var. pricei Stoker, Taiwan. Stem to about 60 cm, flowers solitary and deeper purple outside.
L. leucanthum (Baker) Baker var. centifolium (Stapf.) Stearn from W China is a perennial herb to about 3 m; stems waxy green, hairless; stem roots present; bulbils absent. Flowers trumpet-shaped, spreading to drooping, tips recurved, fragrant; summer.Tepals to 18 x 6 cm, white, flushed red-purple outside; unspotted. Nectary green, without hairs or warts. Anthers reddish-brown; pollen dark to red-brown.
L. philippinense Baker from the Philippines is a perennial stoloniferous herb to about 1 m; stems green or purplish, hairless; stem roots present; bulbils absent. Leaves cauline, alternate, linear, hairless. Inflorescence 1-2, sometimes to 6 flowered. Flowers trumpet-shaped, spreading, tips recurved, fragrant; summer. Tepals to 25 x 5 cm, white, flushed green and with basal purple streaks outside; unspotted. Nectary white, with hairs. Anthers yellow; pollen yellow.
