Black-eyed Susan

Biennial or short-lived perennial herb to 2 m tall, hairy. Stems simple. Leaves narrow-lanceolate or oblanceolate, to 20 cm long, margins entire or toothed. Capitula radiate, solitary, to 10 cm across; late summer. Ray florets pale yellow, darker at base. Disk florets purplish brown. Pappus absent.

R. californica A. Gray from California is an unbranched perennial herb with entire to divided leaves, capitula to 13 cm across, yellow ray florets and brownish disk florets.

Rudbeckia hirta 'Gloriosa'

This cultivar and other similarly named cultivars and seed mixes have single and double flower heads to 15 cm wide in browns and yellow or are bicoloured. Flowers from seed in 1 year.
