Perennial herb to 80 cm tall, glabrous to hairy. Stems erect, sparsely branched. Basal leaves obovate in outline, to 20 cm long, to 4 cm wide, margins toothed to lobed, sessile or petiolate. Stem leaves few or absent, decreasing in size up stem. Capitula solitary, to 1.5 cm across; spring to autumn. Florets yellow. Achenes 11-17 mm long including long slender beak, ribbed. Pappus of 2 rows of bristles.
