Farfugium japonicum (L.) Kitam.

Perennial herb to 75 cm tall, rhizomatous. Stems erect, unbranched, scape-like. Basal leaves kidney-shaped, to 15 cm long, to 30 cm wide, lustrous above. Stem leaves small, bract-like. Capitula to 6 cm across; autumn to winter. Florets yellow. Achenes cylindrical, 5-6.5 mm long, hairy. Pappus of many dark brown, unequal bristles. [F. tussilagineum (Burm. f.) Kitam., Ligularia tussilaginea (Burm. f.) Makino]
