Shrub to 2 m tall, hairy. Stems erect, much-branched. Leaves ovate in outline, to 10 cm long, to 3 cm wide, margins divided or toothed throughout, petiole-like at base. Capitula solitary in upper axils, to 5 cm across; summer. Ray florets with ligules to 22 mm long, yellow. Disk florets yellow. Achenes 4-6 mm long, 8-10-ribbed. Pappus of many white bristles. E. acraeus M.D. Hend. from S Africa is a dense, rounded shrub that has bluntly 3-toothed leaves, capitula on short stalks, ray florets to 10 mm long and a short white pappus.
E. chrysanthemoides (DC.) B. Nord. from S Africa is an erect, much-branched shrub with variously lobed leaves, capitula on long stalks, ray florets to 20 mm long and lacking a pappus.
E. cuneatus B. Nord. from S Africa is an erect, much-branched shrub with bluntly few-toothed leaves, capitula on short stalks, ray florets to 6 mm long and a short white pappus.
E. pinnatipartitus (DC.) B. Nord. from S Africa is an erect or ascending, little-branched shrub with deeply divided leaves, capitula on short stalks, ray florets up to 11 mm long and lacking a pappus.
E. speciosissimus DC. from S Africa is a tall, erect, glabrous shrub with deeply divided leaves, capitula on long stalks, ray florets to 45 mm long and a long white or brownish pappus. [E. athanasiae DC.]
