Annual herb to 90 cm tall, glabrous or sparsely hairy. Stems erect, branched. Leaves obovate in outline, to 10 cm long, to 5 cm wide, 2 or 3 times divided, upper ones smaller and less divided. Capitula solitary or in loose corymbs, to 5 cm across; summer. Ray florets yellow, rarely white. Disk florets yellow. Achenes about 2.5 mm long, glabrous, of 2 types: those of ray florets 3-angled, with angles winged; those of disk florets ribbed, with usually 2 of the ribs winged.
Mediterranean region to Iran
Grown as border plants or for cut flowers and a range of garden forms widely used in floristry.
Most species formerly included in Chrysanthemum have now been transferred to other genera (see Ajania, Argyranthemum, Coleostephus, Dendranthema, Hymenostemma, Ismelia, Leucanthemum, Rhodanthemum and Tanacetum).
