Shrub mostly 2-4 m tall but sometimes taller. Leaves to about 6 cm long, 3 cm wide, ovate, often asymmetric, margin toothed or scalloped; stalk to 1 cm long. Flower clusters axillary, mostly on old wood. Flowers about 2.5 cm long, tubular and curved, hanging, brick red, 2-lipped. Fruit a blackish berry.
