Commemorating Albrecht von Haller (1708–77).

Evergreen shrubs and small trees. Leaves oblong to ovate. Flowers solitary or in terminal clusters. Calyx bell-shaped, 3-5-lobed. Corolla 4-5-lobed, red. Stamens 4. Fruit a berry about 1 cm wide, with a persistent style.

Grown for the attractive red tubular flowers and neat foliage. P

ROPAGATION Softwood cuttings and layering.

Extracts used locally for medicinal purposes.

Shrub with curved, drooping, red flowers; fruit a fleshy, indehiscent berry.

4 species from tropical and southern Africa and Madagascar.
