Self Heal

Perennial to about 0.5 m long, rooting at the nodes, hairless or with a little hair. Leaves ovate, to about 5 cm long, 2.5 cm wide, with entire margins, stalks to about 2 cm long. Flowers with corolla 1-1.5 cm long, deep bluish purple, rarely white; late spring to early autumn.

Europe

A common naturalised plant of moist areas along roadsides and on disturbed sites in E and southern Australia. Once used as an astringent and gargle for sore throats but with many other uses.

 

P. hyssopifolia L. has leaves linear to lanceolate and more or less stalkless and corolla 15-18 mm long.
