Leonotis leonurus (L.) R.Br.

Lion's Ear

Hairy shrub 1-2 m tall. Leaves lanceolate to oblanceolate, to about 10 cm long, entire or round-toothed. Flowers 5-6 cm long, petals rusty orange; autumn.

S Africa

Naturalised in coastal areas of WA and NSW.

L. ocymifolia (Burm. f.) Iwarsson is a similar shrub, also from S Africa and occasionally available. White-flowered forms sometimes occur in both these species and are referred to as var. albiflora or 'Alba'. The correct names for these white-flowered taxa are uncertain but they are probably best given cultivar names.
