Variable, upright, aromatic perennial to about 0.5 m tall. Leaves linear-lanceolate, entire, stalkless, margins curled under. Flower clusters in a narrow spike with linear bracts. Flowers about 1 cm long, violet, blue, occasionally white or pink; summer.
