Greek premnon — tree stump.
Shrubs, trees or woody climbers. Leaves opposite, simple, decussate, stalked or not. Flower clusters terminal or axillary, generally much branched. Flowers irregular. Calyx persistent in fruit. Corolla 2-lipped, short-tubed, the throat hairy, upper lip entire or notched, lower lip 3-lobed, stamens 4 in 2 pairs. Ovary 2-chambered at first, later 4-chambered. Fruit a fleshy drupe.

Source of timbers; some species have local medicinal uses.

About 200 species from tropical and subtropical regions of Australia (7 species, 3 endemic), Malesia, Asia and Africa.
