Hairy, spreading perennial shrub to 1 m tall. Leaves elliptic to oblong-lanceolate, sometimes tinged with purple or very dark green, a colouring which is prominent in some cultivars. Flowers violet to deep purple or occasionally white, fragrant. [H. peruvianum L.]

Habit compact. Leaves dark and wrinkled. Grows to over 0.5 m tall with prolific deep violet-blue flowers. [H. 'Royal Marine']

H. 'Blue Wonder' is also listed.
