Upright to spreading perennial rhizomatous herb. Leaflets 7-19, ovate to lanceolate. Flowers blue; spring to summer.

P. viscosum Nutt. from N America is also fairly readily obtained. It is an unpleasant smelling perennial to about 20 cm tall with mostly basal leaves; the leaflets are divided, giving them a verticillate appearance. [P. confertum A. Gray]
