A hairless, shrubby climber with scattered, small, recurved prickles. Leaves pinnate, to 30 cm long, with 8-12 leaflets and a large terminal leaflet, sometimes the upper leaves simple. Flower clusters often branched, pendulous, summer. Flowers wheellike, with a corolla to 6 cm or so wide, violet-blue. Fruit round to ovoid, to 10 cm wide.
