Asclepias curassavica L.

Red-headed Cottonbush

Erect shrub to 1.5 m high. Leaf blade lanceolate-ovate, up to 15 cm long and 3 cm wide; tip acute; base attenuate to cuneate. Corolla lobes lanceolate, 8-8.5 mm long, orange-red. Staminal corona yellow.

Naturalised widely in Australia.

 

A. incarnata L. from the USA is an erect subshrub to 1.5 m high. Leaf blade lanceolate to narrow-lanceolate, up to 17 cm long and 5 cm wide; tip acute to longpointed; base obtuse. Corolla lobes narrow-obovate to elliptic, 3-5.5 mm long, pink or pink-white. Staminal corona white.

A. tuberosa L., Butterfly Weed, also from the USA is an erect subshrub to 1m high. Leaf blade lanceolate, up to 8.5 cm long and 1.5 cm wide; tip long-pointed to rounded; base rounded to truncate. Corolla lobes lanceolate, 6-8 mm long, yellow to yellow-orange. Staminal corona yellow to yellowish orange.
