Bitterbark

Tree to 15 m high. Leaves opposite; the blade linear-lanceolate, lanceolate or lanceolate-obovate, 2.5-18 cm long, 0.7-5 cm wide, secondary lateral veins 12-20 per side of midrib; tip acute; base cuneate. Flowers 4-5 mm long, 3.5-13 mm wide; corolla cream. Fruit 7-26 cm long.

Other species occasionally cultivated include A. scholaris (L.) R. Br., Milky Pine, from Australia and Malesia including New Guinea; A. spectabilis R. Br. subsp. spectabilis from Australia, New Guinea and Timor; and A. venenata R. Br. from Africa.
