Flowers in dense, flattened heads of more than ten, almost sessile, not nodding; sepals basally thickened; petals yellow, developing blue blotches in the throat and blade with age; spring- and summer-flowering. Fruit glabrous, numerous, berry-like, cylindrical, to about 15 mm long.
Part of the species complex mentioned below in B. volubila. Previously known in error as B. versicolor.
