Tree to about 10 m tall. Bark almost black. New growth with rusty reddish hairs. Leaves pinnate, 10-40 cm long. Leaflets 8-12, each about 5-10 cm long with a tapering point; margins entire, round-toothed or wavy. Flower clusters to 30 cm long, anthers dark red; spring. Fruit a capsule about 1 cm long, winged above, the black seeds contained in a red, fleshy coat.

New Zealand.
