Small shrub to about 1m tall. Leaves alternate,1-2.5 cm long, cylindrical, sometimes crowded together. Flower heads dense, terminal, globular; spring to early summer. Flowers pinkish purple. Stamen bundles with 5-9 filaments. Fruit capsule 3-5 mm broad.
As currently understood M. scabra is variable and likely to be split into several species.
