Totem Poles

Shrub to 3 m tall. Leaves decussate, linear to oblanceolate, 0.5-1.5 cm long,1-3 mm wide, broadly obtuse, gland-dotted below, faintly 3-nerved on both surfaces, stalkless. Flowers mostly at the base of lateral leafy stems, pink to purple, the spikes sometimes effectively male; late spring and summer. Stamens 10-20, base 0.5 mm long, free parts of filaments 3-5 mm long. Fruit capsule flask-shaped to spherical, eventually sunken in the swollen leafy stem.
