Red Ironbark

Tree to mostly 35 m tall. Bark black, deeply furrowed and hard on trunk and major branches, smooth and white above. Juvenile leaves alternate, stalked. Adult leaves lanceolate to narrow-lanceolate, colour different on each surface. Leaf stalk cylindrical,1-2 cm long. Flowers white, cream, pink or red, common stalk 0.5-2 cm long; May-Oct. Fruits hemispherical to urn-shaped, valves 5 or 6, included.

Distinguished from its close relatives, E. melliodora and E. leucoxylon, by its ironbark, and from other ironbarks by having flowers in 7(-11)s. E. tricarpa has flowers and fruits in 3s.
