Snow Gum

Mallee or tree to 20 m tall. Bark smooth, white to reddish brown and peeling in patches, sometimes with scribble marks. Leaves thick, bluish green. Leaf stalk grooved. Flowers white, in clusters of 7-15 on a common angular or flattened stalk. Fruits about 1 cm long and wide; seeds black, Nov-Jan.

subsp. pauciflora, Snow Gum, from Tas,Vic,NSWand Qld is a tree to 20 m tall. Bark whitish and scribbled. Juvenile leaves ovate and with unequal sides. Adult leaves thick, shiny, bluish green; blade 8-16 cm long,12-32 mm wide. Flowers 7-15. Fruits 6-10 mm long, 5-9 mm wide.A woodland and forest tree of alpine regions such as Mt Hotham. Specimens TAS: Longford (1.5 km along Poranna Rd).

subsp. niphophila (Maiden &Blakely) L.A.S. Johnson &Blaxell, Snow Gum, is a tree or shrub 5-6 m tall, often much smaller. Juvenile leaves round. Adult leaves thick, ovate to broadly lanceolate, thick; blade 5-8 cm long, 1.2-2 cm wide. Flowers in clusters of 7-11. Fruits 5-10 mm long, 6-9 mm wide. Grows naturally in pure stands on the highest peaks of Vic and NSW.

Smooth, scribbly bark; thick, glossy leaves with veins running almost parallel; thick-rimmed fruits.
