Fuchsia Gum

Tree or shrub to 5 m tall. Juvenile leaves ovate, green. Adult leaves lanceolate; blade 6-9 cm long, 1.2-2 cm wide, green, glossy. Leaf stalk flattened, 1-2 cm long. Flowers yellow, solitary (rarely in 3s), the common stalk flat or angular, curved, 3-5 cm long. Buds 4-winged; Dec-Apr. Fruits pear-shaped, 4-winged, 3-5 cm long, 1.5-3.5 cm wide.

The subsp. dolichorhyncha is planted in the mallee region of Vic.

Large, fuchsia-like, brightly coloured (mostly red), 4-sided buds and fruits. E. erythrocorys F. Muell., Illyarrie, from WA though a very different tree, has spectacular and distinctive bright red 4-lobed flower caps and is occasionally encountered in cooler districts.
