Erect shrub to 3 m tall. Leaves opposite, decussate, 1.5-4 cm long, to 1 mm wide, 3-angled, the tip hooked. Flower clusters terminal, flat-topped. Floral tube 8-ribbed. Flowers with a pink nectary at the base; late winter to spring. Sepals pink, to 1mm long. Petals spreading, white to deep pink, obovate, 4-7 mm long. Fertile stamens broad-based, infertile stamens much reduced. Ovary usually with 6 ovules.

This is an extremely important plant in the local and international cut flower industry, with over 100 cultivars listed, including selections of the crosses: C. megalopetalum with C. micranthum; and C. uncinatum with C. axillare, C. ciliatum, C. floriferum, C. forestii and C. megalopetalum.
