Medium erect shrub. Leaves crowded, spreading, more or less cylindrical, 2-5 cm long, about 1 mm wide, mostly hairy. Flower cluster a 1-sided spike. Flowers 4-parted. Stamens red (rarely white). Fruit capsule 7-9 mm long.
Hairy forms are sometimes confused with C. villosus but the two species are easily distinguished by whether they have 4- or 5-parted flowers.
A prostrate form is available.
