Shrub to 5 m tall. Leaves to 15 cm long, 2 mm wide, linear, more or less cylindrical, entire or occasionally a few divided, sharply pointed. Flower clusters profuse, orange to red; winter to early spring. Flowers over 0.5 cm long with style to 2.5 cm long. Fruit to 5 cm long, relatively narrow with an extended beak.
A hardy ornamental bird-attracting shrub.
