Small shrub to 1.5 m tall with new growth generally rusty-haired. Leaves to about 6 cm long, often shorter and about 1 mm wide, more or less cylindrical, 3-angled or channelled above, the tip sharply pointed. Flower clusters in the axils of upper leaves, greenish to pale blue, rarely cream, fragrant; late winter to early spring. Flowers less than 0.5 cm long, the style about 1.5 cm long. Fruit to 2.5 cm long, rough, spiny with a short beak.
